I booked the 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Nyiragongo Hike in Africa with Primate Safaris Rwanda and the first night I slept in Kigali at Frame tree House and its worthy the experience and wake up on the next day at 4pm and started the drive for 2 hours to Musanze Town which is the nearest city to volcanoes national Park and Started the gorilla trekking briefying at 8am where we were allocated the Amahoro gorilla group and we hiked the volcanoes Terrains for over 5 Hours till we found the apes in the wild , Watched them for 1 Hour and returned to the point of issuing the gorilla trekking certificate.
We went to the lodge for lunch and later proceeded to Gisenyi Town and enjoyed out overnight sleep at Lake Kivu Water front beach hotel that was worthy the penny we paid to the company.
The Guide from the company was experienced and reliable as he drove us to the Border of Congo and crossed to Congo for the start of the Nyiragongo Hike in Congo.
As clearly stated that Returning home is the most difficult part of long-distance hiking; You have grown outside the puzzle and your piece no longer fits.
Facts about Nyiragongo Hike in Congo
Mount Nyiragongo is an active strato volcano with an elevation of 3,470 metres (11,380 ft) in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km (12 mi) north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls – one at about 3,175 m (10,417 ft) and a lower one at about 2,975 m (9,760 ft). Nyiragongo’s lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. A maximum elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 3,250 m (10,660 ft) prior to the January 1977 eruption – a lake depth of about 600 m (2,000 ft). A recent very low elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 2,700 m (8,900 ft). Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africa’s historical volcanic eruptions.
The Hiking experienced started in the morning hours and we kept having lunch and eats as we move towards the top of the summit. I would like to thank the porter that I hired and I would like to advise you that never undermine the strength and importance of a guide while in Congo. Potters always ask for USD 10-15 per person but they will save you a lot and will be at your back to enable you arrive at the top of Nyiragongo. We arrived at the top and slept at the top of the summit of Nyiragongo and the experience was worthy the stay.
The next morning we descended down the hill and by Morning hours of 10:00am we were already down the slope of the hill and crossed back to Gisenyi and drove back to Kigali international airport.
In all what I can say is that I like being near the top of a mountain and Mount Nyiragongo was the best experience ever hard in my life. One can’t get lost here at Nyiragongo Hike as the security is ever ready and you travel as a group up to the top. The Hiking Experience was the best ever, among the reasons why am recommending Nyiragongo hike & Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda.
